10 CAD Ice Age (1st) Saber Tooth Tiger 2023 - 2 Oz Silver - Canada

The first issue of the new Ice Age series is proudly presented by Canada. The coin features the Smilodon saber-toothed cat, a predator. Its characteristic feature is the unusually large fangs in its jaws, which protrude outward even when its mouth is closed.

A genus of extinct felids known as machairodonts is called Smilodon. It is the best known saber-toothed cat and one of the best known prehistoric mammals. Although it is known as a saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. During the Pleistocene, the Americas were home to Smilodon (2.5 mya 10,000 years ago). Based on fossils found in Brazil, the genus received its name in 1842; The generic name translates to scalpel or double-edged knife plus tooth. Currently, S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator are considered three distinct species. The latter two species most likely evolved from Megantereon, which in turn most likely evolved from S. gracilis.
