John Mercanti is a well-known American engraver and coin designer who was born on April 27, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his work as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Mercanti began his career at the United States Mint in 1974 as Assistant Chief Engraver. In 1986, he was appointed Chief Engraver, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. During his time at the Mint, Mercanti was responsible for the design of a variety of coins and medals.

One of his best-known works is the design of the reverse of the American Silver Eagle coin, which he created in 1986. The design shows a majestic eagle with its wings spread and a shield on its chest. The American Silver Eagle coin is one of the most popular silver coins in the world and is prized by collectors and investors alike.

Mercanti has also created many other coin designs for the United States Mint, including the reverse design of the American Platinum Eagle coins and the obverse design of the American Silver Eagle coins, which uses Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty motif.
